There is no affirmative action in international admissions (kind of hard, since there are no *-Americans in the international pool). We will, as always, still consider context. So, if youre from a disadvantaged minority group in your country, from a lower socioeconomic background, etc., that will definitely be taken into consideration. In short, being an IAM doesnt really affect your chances one way or the other. As an international applicant, it will be hard in any case, with an admit rate of ~5%. A Focus Upon Nature in Wuthering Heights - Free Essay Example

Perhaps one of the most prevalent themes in literature and creative written works in general is a focus upon nature and the natural world that surrounds us. It could be said that writers can easily draw inspiration from an aspect of our world that is so captivating, yet wildly unpredictable. In the rapidly advancing urban settings that dominated the Victorian era, it may have been easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of daily life. However, writers managed to find solace by writing works inspired by the environment surrounding them. Two Victorian era writers, poet William Wordsworth and author Emily Bronte, both express these thoughts in their works Ode: Intimations of Immortality, and Wuthering Heights, respectively. While Wordsworths poem and Heights differ dramatically in style, syntax, and format, they both make similar, explicit statements about the way nature influences the individual. Despite the harsh depiction of weather and nature in Wuthering Heights, weather and nature is ultimately what brings Heathcliff and Catherine together, similarly to how Wordsworth finds strength and solace within himself through his experiences in nature. A common, strongly held theme in Wuthering Heights is the idea that nature and weather plays a largely negative role throughout the novel. While this is often true, there is a deeper connection that Heathcliff and Catherine find through their environment which connects them on a more profound level than other characters throughout the novel. Often overlooked is that fact that both characters were fond of the outdoors and have memorable experiences together at the moors. Much like Wordsworths Ode, they can find solace in their shared love of nature, despite growing jaded and hardened to a seemingly unforgiving world and the negativity surrounding them. When analyzing Wuthering Heights through the lens of Wordsworth, it is important to get a feel for Wordsworths perception of nature. Victorian-era views of nature were largely positive and became a significant ideal of the society as a whole. Wordsworth was perhaps most well-known at this time for his nature-based poems which held flora and fauna nearly to the point of godliness. For Wordsworth, nature was an important part of the life of the Victorian individual and felt that it was good for the soul to spend time outdoors. For example, in his poem Ode: Intimations of Immortality, Wordsworth paints a picture of ameadow, grove, and stream, / The earth, and every common sight, / To me did seem / Apparlld in celestial light (Wordsworth 1-4). He even goes as far as to say that he feels his heart and soul are one with the nature that surrounds him when he describes his heart is at your festival (Wordsworth 149), the your referring to nature. Perhaps the most important portion from this p oem is when Wordsworth describes his uneasiness for how he feels he has become too knowing and jaded by the world around him. Despite these feelings, he reflects on the memories he has held as a from when he was a young boy who was more excited and less hardened by the world. He describes his ability to reflect on these memories as a primal sympathy (Wordsworth 157). It is clear that nature is remarkably important to Wordsworth with the implication that he quite literally may not be able to live a happy life without it. These ideas presented by Wordsworth are central to Emily Brontes depiction of Heathcliff and Catherine. Despite the harsh environment they are forced to live in, and the way Wuthering Heights manipulates their character, they both are able to find their primal sympathy in their environments, primarily the moors. Severe weather and an unforgiving environment, though not incredibly blatant, do prevail as major themes in Wuthering Heights that manipulate the characters into becoming who they are and make the decisions they choose to make. Weather and nature in literature can tend to be overlooked as a few sentences that establish setting. Bronte, however, chooses to let nature-related themes be one of the driving factors to the plot. The two houses in Wuthering Heights, chaotic dreary Wuthering Heights and serene affluent Thrushcross Grange, sit in between a harsh land referred to as the moors. The moors are described as the valley of Gimmerton, with a long line of mist winding nearly to its top (Bronte 74). There is a certain mystery and ambiguity surrounding the moors: a dark and lonely environment, far from any city life, with essentially no flora and fauna. This only compliments the strange, unexplained occurrences in the Wuthering Heights house. Thus far, the moors do not appear to be an environment that Wordsworth would speak so fondly of in a poem. However, the moors play a key role in establishing and developing the romantic relationship between characters Heathcliff and Catherine. Catherine and Heathcliff find themselves to be incredibly similar in character. Heathcliff has had a rough go at life ever since his less-than-perfect childhood; Catherine is prone to changing moods quickly and has a short fuse. The home they live in does not help their situations, as they are consistently affected by the negativity that is always within the house. In a different sense, they are also both deeply connected to nature and the moors. It is no coincidence that Catherine uses nature-related imagery to describe her love for Heathcliff; at one point, she confesses to Nelly that her love for Heathcliff is like the eternal rocks beneath (Bronte 64). Therefore, despite the harshness and mystery of the moors, they become a safe-haven for both characters to express their love for one another and truly release from the harsh realities of their respective worlds and roles, much like Wordsworth does in his escape. Bronte writes the characters from a very Wordsworth-ian perspective in having the characters still find the beauty in the nature they are presented with, despite it not being picture-perfect like Wordsworths. The two houses and the moors are specifically located in the middle of nowhere because it represents the idea that they are a place where the characters can escape without the pressure from the worries and requirements that are forced upon them in everyday life. While Bronte describes the moors as being a rough and unforgiving place, there is also a mild sense of wonder in what lies within the moors and Catherine and Heathcliff have bonded over this wonder, which also explains why they feel themselves as being so close to one another. They may also feel a strong connection to the moors because they both played there together as children a theme strikingly similar to Wordsworths ability to rethink on memories of nature as a child in order to enjoy it in the present. As mentioned in the previous quote, Catherine perceives her love for Heathcliff as being as eternal as the rocks beneath her, meaning, like their shared love of the moors, their love will last forever.

Abstract In the following paper, I will analyze the movie; Front of The Class using two of the theories were taught in class. The movie, Front of The Class, is about the journey of a boy named Brad who for many years was living with un-diagnosed Tourette Syndrome, which Brad referred to as his â€Å"constant companion†. Tourette Syndrome is a nervous system disorder which causes the person to suffer from â€Å"tics† which can be described as sudden movements, sounds or twitches that are involuntary and repetitive (CDC, 2015). Brad was raised primarily by his mother as his parents divorced when he was young. Brad did not have a secure attachment to his father he like others thought Brad could control his behavior, often scolding him and telling him to focus and use self-control. Men are stable and women are capricious. Logic is masculine and imagination is feminine. Ibsen uses stereotypical gender attributes in his characterization of Nora and Torvald throughout A Doll House, and then abruptly reverses the stereotypes in the final moments of the play to show that inner strength and weakness are functions of being human, not functions of gender. â€Å"When A Doll s House debuted, its ending -- perhaps the most celebrated in modern drama – shook the foundations of fin-de-sià ¨cle domesticity† (Westgate, 2004, p. 502). Question: Describe about An Analysis of The Beverage Market. Answer: Introduction This paper analyses the data collected from a survey carried out at La Trobe University. As a result, our aim is to try to understand the demand of beverages by students in the university. The survey was conducted on all the BUS1BAN students and they respondent to the survey questionnaire online. The paper then conducts an analysis of the data obtained according to the provided excel spreadsheet by simple random sampling procedure where the data from cells A3 to cell Z554 was selected and by going to Data, we selected sort by random number a step that changed the order of the responses recorded. 100 responses were selected for our working sample and copied on a different spreadsheet. Data Analysis Section A: Basic Analysis Out of the 100 samples selected for sampling, 90 of the students were local, and 10 are international students. Hence, 90% of the sample comprises local students, and 10% comprises of international students. According to the data collected, more students demand the beverages when their prices are lower. This brings us to a conclusion that, the less elevated the prices, the more the demand and as the prices decrease the demand becomes lower. Based on the random samples selected, more students have milk and water drinks (others) as their first preference meaning that this is the most popular beverage. On the other hand, most students have placed energy drinks as their last preference (5) hence making this the least popular beverage. The prices of the beverages tend to affect the preferences since students indicate that if the prices of the second preferences were lower than the first preference. According to the student responses, more students would change their first preferences to t he second best preference in case the price of the second preference was lower by 60% and with a notable change in the price of the second option by 25% less, fewer students are likely to change their first preference for the second. Hence, the higher the price difference, the more the shift to the cheaper beverage and vice versa. Section B: The behavior of local students versus the International Students There is no significant difference in the price to quantity relationship on the international students and the local students in the sample obtained. All the students would buy less when the prices are highest and buy more when the prices are lower. Some of the students buy more beverages when the prices are moderate and not very low. Most of the international students have tea/coffee as their first preference making this beverage the most popular while most students have energy drinks as their last preference hence making this beverage the least popular among the international students. The local students, on the other hand, have the least preference for energy drinks hence making this as the least popular beverage, and most of these students have water/milk (other) as their first preference hence making this the most popular beverage among the local students. The prices of the beverages influence the choices of the local students more than for the international students though most of the students from both groups would opt for the second preference if its price were lower than that of the first preference by a certain percentage (40% and 60% mostly). Both groups follow the law of demand that states that the most elevated the prices, the less the demand for the goods in question and the less elevated the prices, the higher the demand. Section C: Advance scenarios Since the population size is 100 students and it comprises of two samples (local and international students), the mean of the population is 50. There are 90 local students (x) and 10 international students (y). The interval estimate will be x50 and y Of the sample selected randomly, 14 students would have a soft drink (Coke, Pepsi, etc.) as their first preference out of the 100 students. Assuming that the student selected is x, then the interval estimate is x Of the fourteen students who chose soft drink as their first preference, 3 of them chose tea/coffee as their second preference. Hence, the interval estimate based on the mean of 14, if x 14% of the students chosen for the random sampling prefer soft drinks over the other beverages. The paper hypothesizes that more than 25% of the students at La Trobe prefer soft drinks. Hence, HO; there is no significant difference between the value hypothesized and the statistical value. HA; there is a significant difference between the hypothesized value and the statistical value. Following a normal distribution, the level of significance will be 1%, 5%, and 10% Degrees of freedom= 5-1= 4 Experiments degree of freedom; x2= (14-25)2/ 25 4.84 The P value is between 0.1 and 0.9 Hence, this means that the value is not below 0.1 hence we reject the hypothesis measured at a significant level of 1% and that of 5% and accept the one tested at 10% Suppose a total of 20,000 students (10000 local and 10000 international) attend La Trobe University every week. The university expects this number to increase by 25,000 next year (comprising of 10,000 local and 15,000 International students), then the preferred beverage for the international students will have an increased demand and so will the overall demand for the beverages. Since according to the results most international students prefer tea/coffee, the consumption of this beverage will be higher than for the rest of the beverages. Summary According to the data obtained from the simple random sampling, it is clear that the local students prefer water or milk, and this is the most popular beverage while the least preferred beverage among the local students is energy drinks. The international students also prefer energy drinks the least and mostly consume tea or coffee as their most popular beverage. On overall, all the students prefer energy drinks the least. All the students are likely to change their preferences according to the prices of the beverages since they are all driven by the law of demand which states that the demand is higher when the prices are low. Random sampling may have increased the accuracy, but there is the issue of less international students having been involved in the survey hence making their responses less reliable in the analysis unlike a large number of the local students interviewed.

The way he says nobody from this house that in his mind, he rules the house and everyone in it. It is his kingdom and they are his servants. If they do not obey him, then they are betraying him, and should be kicked out. He is being rather babyish, seeing it as a them and us situation, with no possible middle ground. This speech also tells us that he thinks that hes in the right, and that it should be Marco who comes to apologise to him, but as we have already seen, Marco thinks hes in the right and wants Eddie to apologise to him. They are both very similar, and both just as stubborn, which creates tension, as we know that neither will give in and apologise; yet both expect the othe r to. Catherine has finally had enough of Eddies primitive behaviour, and openly rebels for the first time, the most interesting part being her extended metaphor, Hes a rat, he belongs in the sewer! [Beatrice]: Stop it! [Catherine][Weeping]: He bites people when they sleep! He comes when nobodys looking and poisons decent people. In the garbage he belongs! First of all, we discover to what point Catherine despises him. Calling him a rat removes any human nature from him, so she doesnt even consider him a human. Then there are the things he does. For example, he bites people when they sleep probably refers to the boxing incident, when he hit Rodolpho hard, while Rodolpho trusted him and wasnt prepared for it (like when you sleep). Then he comes when nobodys looking, which could refer to the calling of the immigration officers, and poisons decent people, which almost certainly means the way in which he made decent Marco want to kill him. With so much hatred, also comes tension, as the audience wonder how Eddie will respond to having his authority undermined by one who he thinks respects him. The result of the rebellion, which makes Eddie realise she no longer respects or obeys him, is that he nearly attacks her, [Eddie seems about to pick up the table and fling it at her]. This is a very tense moment, and shows just how distraught and desperate Eddie is. He loves Catherine more than anything else (perhaps too much), and the reason all this happened was because of how he cared for her and loved her. If now he is prepared to physically harm her, its that he is emotionally at breaking point. Over the last few days, his life has fallen apart, and we know he cant stop now.  Luckily Beatrice is there to calm him down, and she decided to take his side, Now go, go to your wedding Katie, Ill stay home. Go. God bless you, God bless your children suggest that shell never see her again, or her children, making this a very emotional sentence. Then, in comes Rodolpho paving the way for a final showdown, Marco is coming Eddie. [Pause. Beatrice raises her hands in terror] Hes praying in the church. You understand? [Pause. Rodolpho advances in the room]. Catherine, I think it is better we go. This speech can have two meanings, depending on how the director asks the actor to say it. The actor could make out that Marco wants to come and kill Eddie, and Rodolpho has come to watch Eddie squirm, or alternatively, could make out that Marco is coming to apologise. I personally think that Miller intended it to be the former, as he has set the scene for revenge on Rodolphos part earlier, when, after being punched, Rodolpho responds with [a certain gleam and a smile]. This smile suggests that he knows whats going on, and will get him back. I also believe that Marco is coming to kill Eddie, because in the previous scene, Alfieri kept telling Marco only God makes justice. Maybe Marco paid attention to this, and is praying for justice. Beatrice has obviously also come to the same conclusion as we can see from her reaction, and her next line, lets go someplace [] I dont want you to be here when he comes. If he were coming to apologise, she would want him to be there. Eddie on the other hand may, blinded by his emotions, think he has come to apologise, which could be fatal. Even with Beatrices pleading, Eddie wont be moved. Hes already had too much, Where am I goin? This is my house. So at least Eddies not kidding himself; he agrees with Beatrice, and thinks that hes coming for revenge, but because of his pride, he refuses to leave. He also possibly doesnt realise how dire the consequences could be. He wants to defend his honour and his territory, and wants to punish Marco for insulting him so badly. We realise that no amount of persuasion from anyone will make him change his mind. This helps create quite a bit of tension, as we know that there will be a climatic fight. Even Rodolpho changes his mind and doesnt want a fight anymore. He says, [Quite suddenly, stepping up to Eddie]: It is my fault Eddie. Everything. I wish to apologize [] I kiss your hand [He reaches for Eddies hand, but Eddie snaps it away from him] On first inspection, this redeems Rodolpho. The words quite suddenly suggest that seeing how distraught Beatrice was, he changed his mind. He is willing to forget all the insults and other bad things Eddie has done to him, which makes the audience trust him again. But rereading it, it seems that he is possibly just trying to get Beatrice and Catherine to think that hes a very good man. The proof for this is that he says it only after Eddie has made it clear that he wont change his mind, so he knows it wont have any effect on Eddie, just on the others present. Eddies symbolically rejects the apology, signing, in doing so, his death warrant. The persuasion goes on and on, with the effect of hyping up Marcos coming, telling the audience that it will be grandiose and possibly fatal. It also has the effect of making the others seem nicer, as they all (even Catherine) plead with him not to stay. But Eddie wont listen, I want my name! He didnt take my name; hes only a punk. Marcos got my name [To Rodolpho] and you can run tell him kid, that hes gonna give it back to me in front of this neighbourhood, or we have it out. [Hoisting his pants]. Eddie is taking this honour and respect thing very seriously, which is why he wont accept Rodolphos apology. To him, Rodolpho is just a stupid kid with dyed hair (in other words a punk). His lack of intellect is shown by the fact that he doesnt realise that hes lost his respect and no-one can give it back. All he understands is physical action, so he hoists his pants, showing that he is ready for action, and is prepared to fight for his honour if Marco doesnt apologise. We all know this wo nt happen, so the tension starts building. Beatrice, in a desperate attempt to stop him, breaks down in front of Eddie, [barring his way to the stairs] whats gonna mean something? Eddie, listen to me. [] Listen to me, I love you, Im talking to you, I love you. First of all, we can tell that shes getting very desperate, as she bars his way; something that would take a great deal of courage, and despair gives you that courage. In addition, she speaks in short sentences, which makes it seem as though shes trying to grab his attention. She repeats, Listen to me, which would suggest that Eddie is ignoring her. She also repeats, I love you to try and make him realise what harm he could to those who love him, and to tell him that hes not yet totally alone. To emphasise this last point, she also says, Im talking to you. This could be just to make him listen, but it might also be to tell him that she, unlike everyone else in the community, still respects him.
